DIY Beard Oils, Balms, Washes and Waxes
Every November men across the world grow out their facial hair to help bring awareness to men’s health and cancer research. In honor of this month (and all the extra hair), I wanted to share some of my top recipes for nourishing those beautiful locks of love growing on men’s faces everywhere. Here are my top DIY recipes to support healthy mustache and beard growth.
In these recipes I included the best essential oils for providing moisture and promoting healthy hair growth. Here are some of my favorites:
Lavender: Soothes scalp and dry hair.
Cedarwood: Strengthens hair and hair growth, soothes itchiness.
Chamomile: Soothes inflammation and adds shine.
Peppermint: Cleanses and stimulates scalp and hair follicles.
Carrot Seed: Promotes hair growth, shine and softness.
Rosemary: Stimulates hair follicles and growth, balances sebum production.
Tea tree: For oily hair, dandruff and lice.
Eucalyptus: Boost scalp health and promotes circulation.
Clary Sage: Promotes growth and balances sebum production.
Thyme: Promotes hair growth, cleanses scalp.
Rosemary has been studied and shown to promote hair growth. In 2015, a randomized comparative trial was published that looked at the effectiveness of rosemary oil compared to minoxidil 2% (a common conventional treatment) in 100 subjects with androgenetic alopecia (baldness related to genetics and hormones). For 6 months, 50 patients were randomly assigned to use rosemary oil and the other 50 patients used minoxidil 2%. The findings of the trial found that after 6 months, both groups experienced a significant increase in hair count which helps provide evidence of the efficacy of rosemary oil for promoting hair growth. Other essential oil blends have also been shown to be helpful in promoting healthy hair growth. In a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial, 86 patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups. The active group massaged a blend of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedarwood essential oils in jojoba and grapeseed oil into scalp daily. The control group only used the carrier oils. Follow up was at 3 and 7 months. 44% of active group participants showed improved compared to only 15% of control group, showing that aromatherapy may be a safe and effective treatment for hair loss. Carrier oils can also be helpful in promoting hair growth, moisture and shine.
Mustache Wax
My husband loves this mustache wax more than any other one he has purchased in the past. He says that it really holds his handlebars up for a long time! (Which cracks me up so much!) You can always adjust the consistency of this wax by adding more oil or beeswax. If the salve is too thin, melt it down and add more beeswax. If the salve is too thick, melt it down again and add more oil. I hope you love this recipe and can channel your inner Dr. Eggman when using it!
Mustache Wax
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup beeswax pastilles
- 1/4 cup refined coconut oil
- 10 drops of essential oils of choice
- 1-2 Oz Glass Jar

- Melt down in a double boiler at medium temperature, stirring often.
- While waiting for combination to melt, choose essential oils or essential oil blend to use. (Some examples in the notes)
